Smoketown has been a historically black neighborhood near downtown Louisville, since the Civil War. It gained is name from the smoke producing brick kilns that were historically concentrated in the area. The mural depicts famous residents that called Smoketown home throughout its history.
The historic Stovall Cabin, was built in 1873 by Edwin Stovall, and was originally designed a two story structure, but was reconfigured to the present dimensions as a result of deterioration of the original facade. The cabin was originally located in Radcliff. Saunders Springs is located just on the edge of the Fort Knox military base.
