Early morning at a famous Kentucky thoroughbred horse farm in Lexington, Kentucky during a beautiful sunrise, as the fog lifts, and slowly floats across this region’s fields of bluegrass.  Home of the Kentucky Derby, horse racing is a billion dollar industry in the state, bringing horse enthusiasts and tourists from all over to watch the beginning race of the Triple Crown.

A lawn jockey seen in the historic downtown of Versailles, Kentucky.  Lawn jockey’s are a common sight in Kentucky, particularly in rural areas, and in particular horse rearing areas of the state, like the Bluegrass region where thoroughbred horse racing and the Kentucky Derby held each spring in Louisville, are a multi-billion dollar industry. Versailles, lies in the heart of the bluegrass, so I was not surprised to find one.

This painted horse, called “Modern Iron Horse”, was part of Lexington, Kentucky’s 2022 Horsemania, a public art project that saw the creation of more than 160 painted horses by professional artists, and children from middle and elementary schools. Lexington in Kentucky’s Bluegrass Region bills itself as the Horse Capital of the World, and is world famous for its horse farms, and is the center of thoroughbred horse racing in the United States. Kentucky is also known for the Kentucky Derby, one of three horse races that make up the Triple Crown of Horse Racing. Horse Mania began in June 2022, and concluded after the Breeder’s Cup held in early November at Keeneland, in Lexington.
