A view of the Riverboat Mary M. Miller passing through the McAlpine Lock and Dam on the Ohio River, near Louisville, Kentucky. Mary M. Miller was a steamboat captain, and the first woman in the United States to earn her steamboat master’s license in 1884. She along with her husband George Miller ran the steamboat Saline on the Mississippi River and its tributaries.
