Tell City, named after William Tell, and built by Swiss immigrants from Cincinnati, sits on the banks of the Ohio River on the border of Indiana and Kentucky. It was founded in 1858.
William Tell is a famous folk hero of Switzerland, known as an expert marksman with a crossbow, with the ability to easily shoot an apple off of someone’s head without harming them. He has been associated with a variety of historic events in Switzerland, including being instrumental in the founding of the Swiss Confederacy itself. In most cases he is depicted like a Robinhood figure, fighting against evil tyrannical rulers and foreign powers like the Austrian Hapsburg Dynasty.
