The Kentucky State Capitol was built between 1905 and 1909 for a cost $1 million dollars. Located in Frankfort Kentucky, it is the fourth permanent capitol building, built in Kentucky. Two burned down, and the third stands not far from the current capitol building. The Kentucky capitol holds all three branches of state government, including the legislature, the supreme court and the executive branch. It includes offices for the governor, lieutenant governor, the attorney general, and the secretary of state.

The building was constructed in the Beaux-Arts style and features a number of French architectural elements. The designer Frank Mills Andrews was a distinguished and award-winning architect. The interior of the building includes a number of bronze statues – Abraham Lincoln (pictured), Henry Clay, Dr. Ephraim McDowell and Alben Barkley (a farmer vice president). Until recently Jefferson Davis, the only president of the Confederacy, was included among them. His statue was removed in 2020, and placed in Fairview, Kentucky, his birth place and the location of a monument built in his memory, in 1973.

On a side note, the Kentucky State Capitol reminds me quite a bit of the Utah state capitol inside, and was built around the same time period (1912-1916). Even though they consider the Utah building Neoclassical revival, Corinthian style architecture

This was a short-lived mural in the city of West Jordan, Utah. It commemorates the work of Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta, founders of the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA). Following the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, both labor leaders fought to improve the lives of farm workers in California, through non-violent protests. Eventually they would merge the NFWA, with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC) formed by the Filipino-American labor organizer Larry Dulay Itliong, to create the United Farm Workers (UFW) labor union known today. One of Chavez’s most noted accomplishments was the Delano Grape Strike of 1965-70, which highlighted the treatment of farmworkers by major table grape growers. Through a combination of consumer boycotts, marches, community organizing and nonviolent resistance, the organizations that would become the UFW, were able secure a collective bargaining agreement that benefited more than 10,000 farmworkers.

While Cesar Chavez died in 1993, and lost a lot of support due to controversial actions in his later years, he remains a folk hero among Mexican-Americans. And Dolores Huerta, even at the current age of 90, remains active as a labor leader and civil rights activist.

Whenever one under takes light painting under the Milky Way, a variety of things must be taken under consideration. Timing is everything, and you have to wear a variety of hats, including those of a weather man and astronomer, and not just a photographer. The Milky Way migrates across the sky through out the year, and over the course of the evening. Then you have to worry about what the moon is doing, as it can ruin the entire shot if its high in the sky and near its brightest. You also have to keep in mind how the subject of the shot, in this case, Balanced Rock in Arches National Park, is oriented in relation to the Milky Way, and any man-made light pollution sources. In relation to the latter, Moab is still pretty small, so Arches is one of the best places to take shots like these, not withstanding the wonderful geologic landmarks it and southern Utah are world famous for.
