The monument is a copy of Marie Antoinette’s Temple of Love, in the gardens at the Palace of Versailles in Paris. It was dedicated to Florence Brokaw Martin Satterwhite, who died in 1927, by her husband Preston Pope Satterwhite, a wealthy surgeon.
A view of Louisville, Kentucky’s historic waterworks shortly after sunset. The water tower was built in 1860’s after the city gained a reputation as the “graveyard of the west”, for its polluted, and diseased (Cholera and Typhoid) water supply. The water tower, like Philadelphia’s Fairmount Water Works, was designed with a Roman temple-like exterior to mask the industrial pumping station within the building. The building resides along the banks of the Ohio River on the edge of downtown Louisville. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1971.
The University of Louisville is a public research university founded in 1798, via a charter by the Kentucky General Assembly. The university moved to its current location, the Belknap campus in 1923, and became a public state university in 1970.
The university is home to the Louisville Cardinals, and includes athletic programs for baseball, football and soccer. As of 2013 the Cardinals have won 50 Big East Championships across all sports.
