The memorial was dedicated on Veterans Day in 2001, to honor all of the Medal Honor winners who were born in the state of Kentucky. The memorial depicts a life-size bronze statue of Medal of Honor recipient John C. Squires, who was killed in Italy during World War II.

According to the canonical Gospels, Joseph was married to Mary, the mother of Jesus, and was the legal father of Jesus. He is considered to be the patron saint of workers and the sick, and was declared by Pope Pius IX to be the protector of the Catholic Church.
