The Historic Boone Tunnel is located along the Lexington to Harrodsburg road in Jessamine County Kentucky. Built in the 1870’s it provided a route through the Kentucky Palisades. The tunnel was abandoned in 1953 after the bridge that accompanied it, collapsed into the Kentucky River. Today, Hwy 68 crosses a new bridge, and route that bypasses the cliff the tunnel passes through.

The US Army Transportation Corps was founded in 1942 as one of the Army’s three logistical branches. Its mission was to transport troops and supplies by truck, rail, air, and sea. Anticipating that Europe might be embroiled in yet another world war, the military had a fleet of light weight, disposable box cars developed that could operate on Europe’s rail network. They had the ability to be quickly modified to handle the standard, narrow, and broad gauge railroad tracks that might be encountered in different countries. During World War II (WWII) more than 30 million soldiers were transported within the continental United States; and 7 million soldiers plus 126 million tons of supplies were transported overseas.

A winter sunset along the Ohio River as seen from the Big Four Bridge in Jeffersonville, Indiana. In the distance one can see the Abraham Lincoln Bridge and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge which collectively handle the traffic of I-65 traffic coming down from Indianapolis and up from Nashville, Tennesse. Beyond that is downtown Louisville, Kentucky’s largest city.
