It was designed in 1891 by Frederick Law Olmsted, the father of landscape architecture.

A view of water flowing over the McAlpine Locks and Dam, at the Falls of the Ohio, on the Ohio River. The dam resides between the city of Clarksville, Indiana, and Louisville, Kentucky. The dam and locks were constructed to allow cargo vessels to safely traverse a large cataract (waterfall) on the Ohio River. The Falls of the Ohio is known for it 390-million-year-old fossil beds, which are among the largest exposed Devonian fossil beds in the world.

A rustic log cabin with a prominent stone chimney stands surrounded by trees with budding green foliage in early spring. A wooden rocking chair is visible on the porch, inviting a moment of relaxation in this serene setting.

The setting is intended to give visitors what life was like for early farmers living in southern Indiana, near the Ohio River. Corydon the largest nearby town was founded in 1808 and served as the capital of the Indiana Territory from 1813 to 1816.
