The historic Rice Grist Mill, located in southern Appalachia at Norris Dam State Park in Norris, Tennessee. The original mill was constructed by James Rice in 1798 along Lost Creek in Union County. Four generations of the Rice family operated the mill from 1798, to 1935, when it was relocated by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to its present location. Over its years of operation, it operated as a saw mill, a grist mill, a cotton gin, a trip hammer, and a dynamo to power the mill and the Rice family home. Many of the internal parts and gears of the mill were carved from hickory, and the original millstones were brought across the Atlantic from France.
