Sunset Ridge – Uinta Mountain Range – Utah

The Uinta Mountains, a subrange of the Rocky Mountains, are the highest east-west mountain range in the United States, and the highest mountain range in the state of Utah. The highest peak, Kings Peak is 13,528 ft. Much of the rain from the east and southeast portions of the range flow into the Green River, and ultimately down the Colorado River to Mexico. Whereas water from the west and northwest portions of the range flow into the Provo, Weber and Bear Rivers. All three rivers flow into lakes, including Bear Lake, Utah Lake, and the Great Salt Lake, which is itself the end point for all three rivers, in Utah’s West Desert.

The high Uintas were extensively glaciated during the last ice age, and most of the large stream valleys on both the north and south sides of the range held long valley glaciers.

LeVeque Tower, built in 1927. It was intentionally built to be 555 ft and 5 inches tall, 5 inches taller than the Washington Monument (hard for me to believe the WM is that tall). At the time of construction it was the tallest building in Columbus, OH, and remains the second highest skyscraper today. Designed by Howard Crane.

Historic Midway, Kentucky – Honoring Our Veterans

Historic Midway, Kentucky - Honoring Our Veterans

A very typical scene from rural towns in parts of Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio that I have visited, where local residents hang up street banners recognizing, and honoring the sacrifices of war veterans from many eras, from World War II, up through the present day. I imagine scenes like this are common place in other states in the Midwest as well. This particular photo comes from Midway, Kentucky, which is name Midway because it is half way between Frankfort, Kentucky’s capital, and Lexington, one of Kentucky’s largest cities, the heart of the bluegrass region, and self-proclaimed as the Horse Capital of the United States. Midway was founded in 1835.
