The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway operated from 1868–1987, and serviced Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Virginia. It included stops in Chicago, Cincinnati and Columbus, and Richmond, Va. It was also known as the C&O Railroad. Amtrak currently follows the path it established through the New River Gorge, in West Virginia.

Points of interest include the KFC Yum Center, the home of the Louisville Cardinals men and women’s basketball teams, the 35 story, 549-foot tall Mercer building, the tallest structure in Kentucky, and the Belle of Louisville, a historic 107- year-old riverboat, anchored to the Kentucky side of the Ohio River.
The 2nd Street Bridge connects to Jeffersonville, Indiana.
In 2003, 88 barns, one for each Ohio county were painted to celebrate the 200th anniversary of statehood. This one is located along the Ohio River, in the town of Ripley.
