Spiral Jetty is an earthwork sculpture built by Robert Smithson in April 1970 on the northern shore of the Great Salt Lake in Utah. The sculpture is built of basaltic rock. The sculpture is 1,500 ft long and 15 ft wide, forming a counterclockwise coil jutting into the lake lake. Depending on lake levels the sculpture may or may not be visible. The sculpture emerges from the lake when the lake level drops below 4,195 feet. As of 12/13/15 the lake was at 4,190 feet, more than a foot below the previous record low of 4,191 feet set in in 1963. Its highest recorded level in modern times was 4,211 feet in 1986.
