It was founded in 1881 Mormon pioneers and was a thriving agricultural community with a population of over 400 people at its peak in the early 20th century. However, the town began to decline in the 1920s due to a combination of factors, including a fire that destroyed much of the downtown area, a drought, and the Great Depression. Today, Chesterfield is a well-preserved ghost town and has become a popular tourist destination. Visitors can explore the town’s historic buildings, including the schoolhouse, church, and general store, which have been restored to their original condition.
